Yesterday's papers

Over the past few years, I've been watching YouTube videos made under the Yesterday's Papers aegis. These have titles like 'Cool British singles from January 1965' and 'Ronnie Wood's Early Days in Music (1964-69)'. After having covered cool British singles from the beginning of 1965 until the end of 1968, the new videos are 'The album era: cool albums released in [a month of] 1969'. I was especially awaiting the albums released in October 1969, as I knew one famous example, but I was surprised by some of the other albums released this month. Several of these were played frequently in the youth club that I attended 1970-3.

  • King Crimson - In the court of the crimson king. This is the album that I expected and the video started with it, including some footage that I've never seen before with Fripp playing whilst standing.
  • Led Zeppelin - II
  • Pink Floyd - Ummagumma
  • Pentangle - Basket of light
  • Free - eponymous
  • Frank Zappa - Hot rats

I wrote about the first here1 and the last here2; funnily enough, 'Hot Rats' was playing in my headphones for this morning's walk. These albums might be 57 years old but they still stand the test of time.
