Now every elected official in the country can do what he wants without any
oversight whatsoever. Of course, tomorrow a legal challenge to this travesty will be presented to the Supreme Court, and after that anything can
happen.
When the going gets tough, I am always reminded of Woody Allen. Today I want
to recall part of his very early film "Bananas", where a dictator of an
imaginary South American 'banana republic' goes 'bananas' and starts issuing
edicts such as 'everybody has to wear their underwear outside of their
trousers'.
Theoretically, a minister could make this announcement tomorrow and no one
can challenge it. Of course, no one would honour it, either, meaning that
either everyone gets thrown into prison or that the 'law' is unenforceable.
